New Zealand Flag Variations

Description

An evolution of the existing flag, with the Union Jack removed, the Southern Cross enlarged 50% and moved to the hoist, and the palette adjusted.

As with the Canadian and South African flags, the flag is punchier than and distinct from its predecessor yet based on elements from it. There are nods to the country's British and Maori heritage in the proportions and palette respectively, but not so strong that other groups are excluded.

The Southern Cross is a symbol of our status as a Pacific nation, and with the new palette and visibility whether draped or flown taut our flag can now no longer be mistaken for its pale imitators - imitators who neglect to pick out the four stars actually forming the cross in favour of merely the five brightest in the constellation, imitators who fail to indicate the stars' relative brightnesses, imitators who even fail to place the stars in their correct relative positions. The Southern Cross may not be unique but our representation is.

Whilst we are unlikely to ever succumb to American grotesquery, it seems to suit us as a nation to keep our formal and informal symbols separate, though tied by the common use of a black field. This also frees us to fit the stylisation of kiwi and silver fern to purpose and prevailing taste, be it timeless or best forgotten, as with a certain All Blacks fern from the 1960s.

As practical considerations, the flag is easily adjusted for different proportions or incorporated into a logo, readily defaced for use as an ensign, and its life extended by freely taking it in at the fly as it wears.
